Affordable Housing Houston is an affiliate of the Houston Housing Authority. The agency provides affordable homes and services to more than 60,000 low-income Houstonians, including over 17,000 families housed through the Housing Choice Voucher Program and another 4,200 living in 23 public housing and tax credit developments around the city. HHA’s mission is to improve lives by providing quality, affordable housing options and promoting education and economic self-sufficiency.
Addressing the Housing Shortage in Houston
The Houston Housing Authority is diligently working to acquire or to build more affordable housing in the greater Houston area. This is part of a committed agency effort to address the economic hardship facing many low-income renters in Houston. Even before the Coronavirus pandemic, the city ranked fifth in the nation and first in Texas for having the most severe shortage. There are only 19 affordable housing units for every 100 households in need, or about an 80% deficit, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition.
The demand for public housing, affordable housing, and housing vouchers is so high that it exceeds the current available housing stock. In a concerted effort to meet the intense level of affordable housing demand, HHA began using the PFC model. The majority are mixed-income projects being developed in partnership with Affordable Housing Houston, and will ultimately provide an increase in available affordable units.
Why HHA partners with Affordable Housing Houston
As an affiliate of the Houston Housing Authority (HHA), Affordable Housing Houston can retain all the same rights as the HHA. A property acquired by Affordable Housing Houston does not have to pay property tax which allows the development company to offer decreased rent for 51% of the units in the property. That incentivizes these companies to provide low-income housing within their development. As a result, the benefits of these partnerships extend to all Houstonians because they are provided with more affordable housing options in Houston and surrounding areas.
